Loraine Donnedieu de Vabres-Tranié

Loraine, the spirit of defense. She came to competition law through criminal law, and has kept this DNA to handle all cases. In competition law, of course, where she was at the origin of the first successful challenges to searches, and where she is still at the forefront of litigation cases, whether before competition authorities, sectoral regulatory authorities or commercial courts, and foreign competition authorities. She has been involved in a number of cases relating to competition and telecommunications sector regulation, particularly in Eastern Europe and Morocco. Hence her extensive experience in cartel and abuse of dominance cases, particularly in the area of deregulation, and her handling of complex merger cases, including in phase 2 or when negotiating innovative commitments: simply as litigation. She is also at the forefront of evidentiary issues, as well as on the question of sanctions and challenges to their calculation, due to its involvement in the process that led to the rules for setting fines. In short, her practice area covers the entire spectrum from searches to private enforcement via antitrust litigation and possible criminal aspects, to the creation of a new competitive landscape via settlements and the negotiation of appropriate commitments.

She is also committed to assisting companies in the development and implementation of compliance programs, as well as in the conclusion of transactions. She has just negotiated with the French National Financial Prosecutor’s Office the third “CJIP” in the field of corruption of foreign public officials.

In March 2024, she was appointed as an expert to the ‘Permanent Delegation to the Court of Justice and the General Court of the EU and the EFTA Court’ of the Council of European Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE).

She has taught at Sciences Po Paris and at the University of Paris IX Dauphine and is currently participating in the Competition Law Diploma at the University of Paris II Panthéon-Assas.

C Strength

For this analytical and intuitive mind, the idea that will turn the case around comes from meticulous work on the documents. Known for her tenacity and pugnacity in the defense as well as in court, her motto could be: “never give up”.

Commitments

Loraine cannot imagine life without commitments. She is currently Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Care France, director of Care International Morocco and of the Alzheimer’s Research Foundation. She is also a director of the endowment fund of the French Tennis Federation.

She is also a member of the orientation council of the Institut Montaigne, an expert of the “Club des Juristes” and a member of the steering committee of the DGCCRF workshops.

She is a member of the APDC (Association of Lawyers Practicing Competition Law) and the AFEC (French Association for the Study of Competition), and a former member of the National Bar Council (”Conseil national des barreaux”).

Education

Loraine holds a postgraduate degree (DEA) in business and economic law from the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne and a certificate of aptitude for the legal profession. She was sworn in in 1985.
